Dev Log #1 - A New Direction for My SCREAM JAM 2024 Project

[Dev Log - October 16, 2024]

Hello everyone! Today I want to share a major change in the direction of my project. After a lot of thought, I've decided to go back to the foundation of my game, along with ideas from other past projects, to develop a completely new game and release it for SCREAM JAM 2024! 🎃

This new game will no longer be a roguelike. The main reason is that I want to focus on telling a longer, deeper story. I aim to create a narrative experience that feels more immersive and meaningful, something that wouldn’t be as easy to achieve with a roguelike format.

The game will be available in English and Spanish, and I hope to attract players from both language communities. My main goal now is to finish the first level, which will be called The Entrance of the Nocturnal Enchantment. This first level will be crucial in laying the foundation for what’s to come, and I’m really excited to share it with you.

I've already made some progress since the jam started. I'm gathering pieces from my previous projects and will use a battle engine setup that I know works well. I've also changed the game's title and made a few maps. For now, I'll use sprites I made with the editor, but if this project gains support and interest, I'd love to hire an artist to make my characters more detailed. For this jam, I'll use resources and assets I’ve bought from third parties.

Here are some visual updates:

  • This is the new title screen:

  • This is my battle screen: I still need to fix the ATB bar and update the graphics.

  • This is what the game will look like:

I’m putting a lot of effort into this and hope to create a high-quality demo.

My objectives are:

  1. Complete the mapping of the entire first level.
  2. Design at least 13 well-balanced enemies.
  3. Create introduction scenes for the main characters.
  4. Make a challenging first boss.

The game will be a real-time turn-based RPG. I’d like to implement a basic attack system separate from elemental abilities, where the attribute of basic attacks changes depending on skills used (not sure if I’ll have time). I also want to add a quest system, and for this demo, I plan to include around 3 quests, balance the main characters, and create attractive maps.

I hope you enjoy this project as much as I do! Stay tuned for more updates 😊
